First HTS cable delivered to a utility 31/1-2001

"The 31 of January 2001, the first out of three superconducting cables fabricated at NKT corporation was delivered from the testing bed at the Danish Technical University DTU in Lyngby to the installation site in the Copenhagen Energy grid. The cable is rated for operation at 36 kV and 2 kA, and is scheduled to operate throughout 2001 and 2002. The superconducting material was delivered in 1999 and 2000 by Nordic Superconductor Technologies NST.

The installation in the Amager Substation on the island of Amager just south of downtown Copenhagen represents the worlds first HTS cable system to be installed in a public distribution network. The installation, which takes place under a tight time schedule, resembles an early commercial application, namely a high-current urban feeder, which is evaluated as a future alternative in net expansions and in retrofit applications.

The installation in the grid of the local electricity company, Copenhagen Energy  is the culmination of a 10-year collaboration between NKT, DTU, Risų, DEFU, NST, and the eastern and western transmission companies Eltra and Elkraft, supported by the Energy Research Program of the Danish Department of Energy.

It remains to perform the cold acceptance tests and installation of the last two of the 30 m long cables, and the delivery and commissioning of a permanent cooling system designed for the full rating of the cable. The purpose of the installation is to gain experience from a realistic environment of the design, commissioning, and operation of HTS cable systems. The technology promises low-loss and compact transmission systems with power ratings that exceed what is possible with conventional technology at all voltage levels."
