Carrollton Industrial 2000
The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a pioneering project to Southwire to use HTS cable to power an industrial application. In the world's first application of HTS cables for industrial use, Southwire and Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed and tested a 30-meter cable system above ground at Southwire's headquarters city of Carrollton, Georgia.
The system went on-line February 18, 2000, and has operated continuously since then, supplying the power needs for three Southwire plants. Recent analysis showed no significant degradation in the conductivity of the HTS wire after more 40,000 hours of running at 100 percent load.
The Department of Energy's Superconductivity Partnership with Industry credits the Carrollton success as a key leading to more ambitious projects, including another Southwire collaboration in Columbus, known as the Bixby project.[Bixby]
