RETROFIT
Retrofit of cables can occur for several reasons:
Replacing old cables, joints, or terminations that are at the end of their service life;
Increasing the power rating of an existing line;
Replacing oil-filled cables for environmental reasons.
In a situation typical for the U.S. and Europe, cities are built and expanded on top of old infrastructure. As power consumption increases, streets, sidewalks, parks and bicycle paths are dug up in order to add transmission- and distribution capacity in European cities and in global downtown areas. These excavate cost can be several times the cost of the hardware that is installed.
Compact and light HTS cables with a high power rating are suitable for pulling into ducts or tunnels where old cables have been removed. This can be a low-cost alternative to extensive excavation projects or new tunnel projects. Different HTS cable designs are available for different retrofit situations.
